Open Street Map

It is probably well-known that I like open source. Since some months I spend a lot of my free time by editing the Open Street Map (OSM). I would like to introduce you to this project, which will come across everybody’s future as Wikipedia did.

OSM is an open source project which’s goal is to provide a map of the whole globe and as Wikipedia does, it invites everybody to contribute new data under a creative commons license. Analog to the Wikipedia you can create a profile, edit the map, observe map sections, read the history, write blog posts and some stuff more. Things which are necessary for every open source project.

The power of the map is not that obvious. Maybe the map looks nice or maybe not that nice as Google’s map looks like. Just imagine that everybody is allowed to create his custom map: An historical map of the town you are currently visiting or a map where you can find every important information just. Of course there are already maps at the website of OSM. For example the cycle or traffic maps. But there are also smartphone apps as OsmAnd (which is open source, too) which enables you to check for the next café, ATM or just a toilet.

But there are also some amazing projects like the Isometric 3D maps project or the OSM tool Nominatim. Or the routing service “Open Route Service” of the University of Heidelberg.

You will find much more interesting applications of the Data just by searching the internet. Just put “osm” into your request.

And to finish this blogging day I send some sweet regards to…

Tatort is a famous German crime scene which is running since 1970 and playing in Swiss, Austria and Germany. I did not find any subtitles for the newer series until now. (Since you know about subtitles (in English, German or French) I would appreciate some response though.) I am describing here how to download the […]

Facebook

28Jan12

I have a Facebook account since a few weeks. (I do not use a FACE-profile-picture and do use a east european email address.) Then four days ago I was not able anymore to login to my profile. They told me that there was no account belonging to my email address. So, Facebook blocked my account. […]

Facebook: I have a Facebook account now. Certainly without personal information (pictures included) and I usually just use it via TOR proxies. Since I did not choose the profile name Nona Suomy anymore, I got the account without activating it via mobile. There were probably people before me using Nona Suomy as their profile name. […]

If you are interested in reading books on a computer, for example on a tablet. You will find some classical literature in the internet – for free. Project Gutenberg is a platform where several people provide selfmade duplicates of literature which is not protected by copyrights anymore. So for example “Der zerbrochene Krug” (Heinrich von […]

Great! A conversation of two Facebook users.

4chan

05Nov11

I am nerdy, but maybe not nerdy enough: I did not know the importance of 4chan.org. Thank you, Joscha, for this great introduction into the web! It is really impressive. Usually you will find there normal postings. But there is a board called random, /b/, without a specific topic – it is a place where […]
